The Sokoto State Police Command has issued a strong warning to motorists, commercial drivers, tricyclists, motorcyclists, and cyclists against driving against the flow of traffic, popularly known as one-way driving, across the state.
The warning was contained in a statement signed by DSP Ahmad Rufai, anipr, Police Public Relations Officer, Sokoto State Police Command and made available to Newsmen on Sunday.
The Command expressed serious concern over the growing rate of traffic violations involving road users who deliberately flout traffic rules by driving against traffic, a practice it described as dangerous and unlawful.
According to the police, one-way driving remains a major cause of road crashes, injuries, loss of lives, and damage to property, posing a serious threat to public safety.
As part of efforts to curb the menace, the Commissioner of Police has directed all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, Traffic Units, and Tactical Teams to intensify enforcement operations across Sokoto State. The directive mandates the arrest and prosecution of offenders without exception.
The Command urged members of the public to strictly obey traffic laws, respect road signs, and conduct themselves responsibly while using the roads. It emphasized that no individual or category of road user is above the law and warned that violators would be dealt with in accordance with extant laws.
Parents, transport unions, fleet operators, and community leaders were also called upon to caution their members and wards against engaging in the dangerous practice of one-way driving.
The Sokoto State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety of all road users and maintaining peace and order on highways and streets across the state.
