The Sokoto State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Ahmad Ladan Ala, has warned principals across the state to immediately stop the illegal upgrading of Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) to Senior Secondary Schools (SSS) without official approval from the ministry.
Professor Ala issued the warning while receiving the morning briefing at the Sultan Muhammad Maccido Institute of Qur’an and General Studies, stressing that any principal found engaging in such unauthorized actions would face disciplinary measures.
He explained that there are clearly established procedures and approvals required before any Junior Secondary School can be upgraded to a Senior Secondary School.
The commissioner therefore urged School-Based Management Committees (SBMCs), community leaders, and the general public to take note of the directive and ensure full compliance.
In a related development, Professor Ala directed all principals to re-engage their SS3 students in an academic extension programme aimed at preparing them for their forthcoming external examinations.
According to the directive, principals are expected to organize the exercise by preparing a timetable starting from Friday, March 6, 2026. The programme will run daily from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
The commissioner also instructed teachers, Zonal Directors, and Quality Assurance Officers to closely monitor and ensure the effective implementation of the exercise across all schools in the state.
