Residents of the Minannata community in Sokoto have renewed their demands for justice following the killing of a teacher, Usman Halilu, which has sparked widespread anger and mourning.
Halilu was reportedly murdered by Mansur Arzika, a fellow resident of the same area. Community members believe the attack may have been linked to an earlier dispute involving the theft of a mobile phone.
A resident, Maccido Muhammad, explained that the matter had previously been reported to the police, and the suspect was allegedly found with the stolen phone during investigations.
He recounted that the incident occurred late on Sunday night as Halilu was heading home after closing his shop. At about 11 p.m., the suspect allegedly attacked him with a knife, stabbing him while he cried out for help and pleaded to be taken to the hospital.
Witnesses said the attacker initially fled but returned shortly afterward to stab the victim again, leaving bystanders too frightened to intervene.
Halilu was rushed to the hospital but was confirmed dead on arrival.
Following the attack, the suspect reportedly went into hiding but was later apprehended by residents and handed over to the police.
The case was first reported at the Unguwan Rogo Police Station and later transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
A human rights lawyer, Barrister Abdulrahman Jariri, praised the community for resisting mob justice and urged authorities to handle the case transparently while ensuring the suspect is held accountable.
He advised residents to remain calm and allow the legal system to take its course, stressing that the situation requires due process and government intervention rather than vigilante action.
Jariri also called on the Sokoto State Government, lawmakers, and other stakeholders to take practical steps, including providing support to the victim’s family. While acknowledging the governor’s visit to the community, he urged officials to go beyond symbolic gestures and offer meaningful assistance.
He reaffirmed his commitment to pursuing justice through lawful means and encouraged residents to remain patient as the process unfolds.
Another resident, Malam Mudassiru, who claimed to have known the suspect for over two decades, alleged that the accused had previously shown signs of violent behaviour, though not to this extent. He added that the suspect’s family had distanced themselves from the incident and were not attempting to shield him.
