Kebbi State Governor, Comrade Nasir Idris, has rolled out a robust empowerment initiative aimed at transforming the lives of Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) across the state.
This is contained in a statement Signed by Abdullahi Idris Sadaukin Zuru, Special Adviser on Communication and Strategy to Kebbi State Governor and made available to Newsmen.
Speaking at the International Day of Persons With Disabilities celebration the state governor Dr Nasir Idris Kauran Gwandu represented by his Deputy, Senator Umar Abubakar Tafida the Governor revealed that 1,000 PWDs had each received N100,000 in support last year to start small businesses. Another 1,000 beneficiaries are expected to receive similar assistance this year.
Beneficiaries have since ventured into carpentry, welding, poultry, fish farming, and local trade, with many achieving economic independence.
Additionally, 100 mobility-friendly motorcycles were distributed to elderly PWDs, and 30 special assistants were appointed from the PWD community.
Governor Idris reaffirmed his commitment to inclusivity, promising continued representation of PWDs in government bodies and efforts to harness their abilities for the state’s development.
Support also came from First Lady Hajiya Zainab Nasare Nasir Idris, who donated 1,000 bags of rice, and First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, who gave N250,000 each to 200 PWDs.
The Kebbi State Commission for Persons With Disabilities, established two years ago, has played a pivotal role in coordinating these empowerment programs, leading to a significant drop in street begging and a rise in self-reliance.
National leaders at the event including presidential aides and association heads praised Kebbi’s commitment and pledged further support.
